Every week someone writes to us from São Paulo, Belo Horizonte or Curitiba with the same question about the Brazilian driving licence in Portugal: is it good enough to pick up a motorcycle and ride around Lisbon and its surroundings? The short answer is that, in most cases, yes, but with conditions that hardly anyone reads to the end. This guide pulls together what IMT and the Diário da República say about the Brazilian licence and what our rental conditions require, so that you arrive in Sobreda with the right papers and no surprises at the counter.

In short:

  • As a tourist, you can ride in Portugal with your foreign licence for up to 185 days after entering the country (IMT).
  • Since February 2026, an agreement between Portugal and Brazil recognises the CNH of anyone who takes up residence, provided it is valid, less than 15 years old and the driver is under 60.
  • To rent from us, the licence must be valid and recognised in Portugal; above 125 cc you need category A2 or A and to be 21.
  • The deposit runs from €600 to €2,300 depending on the model, blocked on a credit or debit card in the driver's name, and it is released within 5 working days.
  • You book with 30% upfront and each day includes 400 km; each extra kilometre costs €0.49.

What IMT says about a tourist's foreign licence

The Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes (IMT) is the authority that rules on this matter, so that is where we start. On its page about the exchange of foreign driving licences, the text is direct: you may drive in Portugal with your foreign licence for a maximum of 185 days, counted from the day after you enter the country, as long as you have not yet taken up residence. This is the so-called tourist situation.

In practice, someone who lands in Lisbon on 1 October and stays three weeks is comfortably within the limit. Someone coming for six months of remote work starts to get tight on the numbers, and anyone who has already decided to move for good should read the next section. Keep proof of your entry date, because that is when the clock starts.

Already living in Portugal? The 2026 agreement changed the rules

Until 2026, anyone moving from Brazil to Portugal had to follow IMT's general exchange deadlines: for up to 90 days after the residence permit was issued you could keep driving with your foreign licence, but you had to submit the exchange request; between 90 days and 2 years you could no longer drive with it, although you could still request the exchange; after 2 years, only with a practical driving test. These deadlines are still published on the IMT page.

In February 2026, the agreement on mutual recognition and exchange of driving licences between Portugal and Brazil was published as a decree in the Diário da República. DECO PROteste summarises the effect for those with a residence permit: you do not have to exchange the CNH immediately, as long as it meets four conditions. It must be valid, no more than 15 years may have passed since issue or last renewal, the driver must be of the minimum driving age, and must be under 60.

The agreement covers licences in physical or digital format. For our purposes, the essential point is this: a Brazilian resident with a valid CNH within those limits is no longer treated as someone holding a worthless licence. If one of the four conditions fails, the picture changes. An expired CNH does not allow you to drive, full stop, and the exchange becomes mandatory.

What the CNH does not do: take you around Europe

There is one detail that catches many people off guard. According to DECO, the Brazilian CNH is automatically recognised only in Portugal. To drive in other European Union countries, it may not be accepted, and exchanging it for a Portuguese licence is the recommended option. This matters if you are planning a short break in Spain. Under our conditions there is an extension insurance for Spain at €58 per 10 days (October 2026 price), but the insurance covers the vehicle; it does not settle the validity of your licence on the other side of the border. If your trip goes through Seville or Badajoz, first confirm with the Spanish authority or your travel insurer whether the CNH is accepted.

Within Portugal there is no such doubt. The roads of the Alentejo, the Arrábida and the Costa Vicentina are safe ground for a valid Brazilian licence, and if you stay here you have nothing to worry about on this point.

What RENT.MOTO.PT requires of your driving licence

Now the rental side, which is governed by our terms and conditions and by each model's page. Clause 2.1 sets three tiers.

  • Up to 125 cc (for example Honda PCX 125 or Yamaha NMAX 125): 18 years old and a category A1, A2 or A licence, or category B with at least 25 years of age, the latter valid only in Portugal, under Law no. 78/2009.
  • Above 125 cc: 21 years old and an A2 or A licence, according to the category shown on each vehicle's page. Category A2 allows vehicles up to 35 kW.
  • Above 700 cc (for example BMW R 1300 GS or Yamaha Ténéré 700): in addition to the above, at least two years of proven experience on motorcycles with similar characteristics and power.

Clause 2.2 adds that the licence must be valid and recognised in Portuguese territory and in the European Union, in line with the requirements of the traffic authorities and the insurer. And 2.3 says we may refuse the rental, without refunding what has already been paid, if the team concludes that experience or skill is lacking to ride the chosen vehicle safely.

This matters for a Brazilian rider for a concrete reason. The Brazilian licence has category A for motorcycles and B for cars, without the split into A1 and A2 that exists in Europe. The decision to accept a category A CNH for a scooter, a 35 kW naked bike or a big trail bike is made by the shop, case by case, based on the terms above. We will not pretend there is an automatic table. What we can tell you with certainty is what is written, and what is written is: a valid, recognised licence, a category suited to the model, minimum age and experience.

If you are a resident and hold a Portuguese licence obtained by exchange, the conversation is simpler, because IMT has already done the category equivalence and the document says what it is.

Which bike to choose when you arrive with a CNH

Anyone asking whether a Brazilian driving licence is valid in Portugal usually has a 125 in mind for the first week, and that is sound thinking: motorcycle rental in Lisbon often starts there. A 125 cc scooter has the lowest barrier to entry: 18 years old, a €600 deposit on the Honda PCX 125 and the Yamaha MT-125, and riding that forgives almost everything in Lisbon traffic. If your category A CNH is accepted, you move up to the next tiers.

For the middle range, the Honda NC750X and the Honda CMX500 Rebel have a €1,000 deposit and require a category A licence. The Yamaha Tracer 9 GT asks for €1,500. Big trail bikes, such as the Yamaha Ténéré 700 Rally, sit at €1,300, and the BMW R 1300 GS Adventure is the highest at €2,200. All these figures are from October 2026 and appear on each model page.

When choosing, remember that experience counts as much as the paperwork. If your last motorcycle was a 150 cc in Goiânia eight years ago, do not make your debut in Portugal on a 1,300 cc trail bike. Here, prudence pays off more than ambition: a 125 or a 500 cc, well used, will give you a whole week on the road.

Passport and travel items on a table
Passport or citizen card, driving licence and bank card: the pickup trio.

Documents on pickup day

On every model page, the list of requirements is the same. Bring your passport or citizen card, a driving licence valid in the category the model requires, and a credit or debit card in the driver's name for the deposit. It is also noted that you must have suitable experience riding motorcycles.

Two practical notes. First: bring the original licence, valid on the day of pickup. Second: the deposit card must have available limit for the block, and that limit belongs to your bank, not to us. If you are coming from Brazil with an international card, confirm before travelling that the amount of €600 to €2,300 (October 2026 prices) fits within the limit and that the bank does not block payments abroad.

The deposit in practice

The deposit is the guarantee for any damage, insurance excesses, tolls, fines, missing fuel or late returns. It usually lies between €600 and €2,300, and the exact amount for each model is on its specification sheet. The amount is blocked on the card, not charged. When you return the motorcycle with no new damage and nothing outstanding, the block is released within 5 working days. If there is damage not listed on the inspection checklist done at handover, only that damage is your responsibility.

The checklist deserves a word. At handover, one of our representatives carries out a full inspection of the motorcycle's exterior and mechanical condition in your presence, notes and photographs any existing damage, and both parties sign the document in duplicate. On return, only what is not on that sheet can be charged to you. Take your own photographs too, just in case.

Booking, kilometres and where you pick up

You book with 30% of the amount. Each rental day includes 400 km, and each additional kilometre costs €0.49. There is no automatic discount for longer rentals; prices are per day. Pickup is at the Sobreda shop, at Estrada Nacional N10-1 189, every day from 09:00 to 19:00. Delivery to the airport or to your door is available, but it is a separately paid service.

The base price includes a simple helmet with a visor. If you prefer a full-face one, it is €5 per day, gloves cost €2 per day and the protective jacket €5 per day (October 2026 prices). For a week of leisure riding, it is worth adding this gear to the budget from the start. If you plan several days of travel, you will find more detail on kilometres, insurance and deposit in renting a motorcycle to travel around Portugal.

Cases that complicate things

There are four situations in which the answer stops being a simple "yes".

  1. Expired CNH. It does not allow you to drive and is no good for renting. If it is being renewed, wait for the new document.
  2. Licence more than 15 years past issue or renewal. For the resident regime, this limit is one of the agreement's four conditions. If your renewed CNH is dated 2009, check with IMT before planning.
  3. Driver aged 60 or over. DECO warns that these drivers should check the specific rules. Ask IMT for information.
  4. You only hold category B (car). Our rule of category B at 25 is valid only in Portugal, under Law no. 78/2009, and only for models up to 125 cc. If your licence is a Brazilian category B CNH, ask us before booking, because we do not want you to lose your booking deposit.

None of these cases is solved with a friendly sentence at the counter. They are solved beforehand, in writing. Send an email to rent@moto.pt with the model you want, the category shown on your CNH and the issue date, and we will tell you clearly whether we can go ahead. IMT is the authority to consult for anything to do with the legal validity of the licence, and the Your Europe page on driving licences helps you understand how the EU treats the subject.

If you decide to stay: the exchange

If you are going to live in Portugal and want to stop depending on recognition rules, you can exchange the CNH for a Portuguese licence at IMT. According to DECO, the usual documents are a valid identity document, the residence permit, the NIF, the original CNH and the electronic medical certificate, sent by the doctor to IMT after an in-person consultation. Where applicable to the category, a psychological assessment certificate is added. As a rule, no theory or practical tests are needed, thanks to the bilateral agreement, and a provisional document is issued until the Portuguese licence arrives.

DECO recommends the exchange for anyone who wants to drive in other European Union countries, where the CNH may not be accepted. For a resident who wants to spend a weekend in Spain or Galicia, it is the safest route.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Brazilian licence valid in Portugal if I am only a tourist?

Yes, according to IMT, you can drive with the foreign licence for up to 185 days from the day after you enter Portugal, as long as you have not yet taken up residence and the licence is valid. To rent a motorcycle from us, the shop also checks that the category and age match the chosen model.

Do I need to exchange my CNH if I already have a residence permit?

Not immediately, if the CNH is valid, is less than 15 years from issue or renewal, the driver is of the minimum driving age and under 60, according to DECO's summary of the February 2026 agreement. If any condition fails, or if the licence expires, the exchange becomes necessary.

Can I take the rented motorcycle to Spain with my CNH?

You can buy the extension insurance for Spain at €58 per 10 days, but the validity of the CNH outside Portugal is a separate matter. DECO states that the Brazilian licence is only automatically recognised in Portugal, and that in other EU countries it may not be accepted.

When do I get my deposit back?

The deposit is not charged; it is blocked on the card and released within 5 working days after you return the motorcycle. The final time for the amount to show as available also depends on your bank, and you should allow for that if you have a flight or another booking right afterwards.
