Motorcycle Rental in Portugal for Touring: What's Included
Motorcycle rental in Portugal: 400 km a day, deposit, insurance, licence and Spain. Real numbers from our Sobreda shop, October 2026 prices.

There are two ways to see Portugal by motorbike. The first is to buy one, which only makes sense if you are staying here. The second is motorcycle rental in Portugal for touring for a week, ten days or however long your calendar allows. People who choose the second usually have the same questions: what is really included in the price, how many kilometres can I ride, how much gets held on my card, where can I ride and which licence do I need. This guide answers all of it with the numbers from our shop in Sobreda, October 2026 prices, and no hidden small print.
In short:
- Every rental day includes 400 km; each extra kilometre costs €0.49. Over 7 days that is 2,800 km at no extra charge.
- There is no long-rental discount: the daily price is the one on each bike's page, in October 2026.
- You book with 30% of the total; the deposit (from €400 to €2,200 depending on the model) is held on a credit or debit card, not in cash.
- By default, you can only ride in mainland Portugal; going into Spain requires authorisation and an insurance extension (€58 per 10 days).
- Third-party liability insurance, travel assistance, a basic helmet and a lock are included with every bike.
What is included in the daily price
When you open the page of any bike on our website, the price you see already includes 23% VAT. It is not a "from" price with fees showing up at the end. Inside it you get the mandatory third-party liability insurance, travel assistance, a basic helmet with a visor and a lock. The 400 daily kilometres are also part of the package.
What is not included is extra equipment and some services. According to the rental conditions, the reference extras are these:
- full-face helmet: €5 per day;
- protective jacket: €5 per day;
- gloves: €2 per day;
- phone holder: €3 per day;
- insurance extension for Spain: €58 per 10 days.
Do the maths calmly. On an eight-day trip, jacket, gloves and full-face helmet add up to €12 per day, so €96 in total. If you have your own gear, that is money saved. If you do not, it is one of the decisions that weighs most on the comfort of someone spending six hours a day on a motorbike.
Home and airport delivery is a separate paid service. Normal pickup is at the shop, at Estrada Nacional N10-1 189, Sobreda, and some people prefer to start the trip right from there and head off wherever the map sends them.

Kilometres: the sum worth doing before you book
The 400 km per day is not a rigid daily limit. What counts is the total: you multiply the rental days by 400 and compare it with the difference between the odometer at pickup and at return. If you ride 150 km one day and 550 km the next, you pay nothing extra, as long as the final total stays within the ceiling. This is in clause 5.1 of the rental conditions.
| Rental days | Kilometres included | Cost of 300 extra km |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 1,200 km | €147 |
| 5 | 2,000 km | €147 |
| 7 | 2,800 km | €147 |
| 10 | 4,000 km | €147 |
| 14 | 5,600 km | €147 |
The last column is the same in every row on purpose: each kilometre above the total costs €0.49, whatever the length of the rental. 300 km extra is €147, 500 km is €245. In practice, almost nobody goes over. A relaxed ten-day trip, at 250 to 300 km per day, comes to 2,500 to 3,000 km, well below the 4,000 included. If you ride to Lisbon and back, with a detour along mountain roads, you have plenty of margin.
The deposit: how much, where and when it comes back
The deposit is the part that scares first-time renters the most, and it is simple to explain. It is not a payment. It is a pre-authorisation on your card, made at the shop's payment terminal at pickup, which temporarily blocks the amount on your available limit without debiting it from your account. The card must be a physical credit or debit card, in the name of the contract holder. Cash does not work.
The amount depends on the model. For the bikes in the fleet, in October 2026, it ranges as follows:
- 110 and 125 cc scooters: from €400 to €600;
- 350 cc scooters and Honda NC750X: €800 to €1,000;
- Honda Transalp 750 and Honda Africa Twin: €1,000 and €1,100;
- Yamaha Tracer 9 GT: €1,500;
- BMW R 1300 GS: from €2,000 to €2,200.
Each bike's page shows the exact deposit and states that it is returned within 5 working days. After the inspection at return, the shop gives the order to release the hold. The rental conditions add an honest warning: how long your bank takes to show the free balance depends on the card issuer and on the Visa and Mastercard networks, and it can be longer than at the shop. If you travel with a single card, leave a margin on the limit for the following week. If you have two, use the one with more room for the deposit.
If there is damage, missing fuel, unpaid tolls or fines during the rental, the shop may convert part or all of the held amount into a charge. That is why the inspection at pickup is useful: damage that already exists is recorded and photographed on a checklist signed by both parties, and only what appears on top of that is your responsibility.
Insurance and own damage: read the "Included" field
All bikes have mandatory third-party liability insurance, which covers damage to others. Cover for your own damage, theft and total loss may or may not be included, and it is stated in each listing. When it is not, you can add extra cover per day. Without it, you are responsible for repair costs, or for the market value in case of theft or total loss, up to the amount of the deposit. If the damage exceeds the deposit, the difference is also yours.
In two sentences: when booking, read what the "Included" field says for the bike you chose, and decide on that basis whether to take the extra cover. It is not a decision to make at the counter with a backpack on your shoulders.
Which licence you need and where to check it is valid
There is no single answer here, because it depends on the bike. According to each model's page, the requirements in October 2026 are:
- scooters up to 125 cc: minimum age of 18 and an A1, A2 or A licence, or a B licence held at age 25 or over (in the latter case, valid only in Portugal);
- Honda ADV 350 and other A2 bikes: minimum age of 21 and an A2 or A licence;
- Honda NC750X, Transalp 750, Yamaha Tracer 9 GT and other category A bikes: minimum age of 21 and an A licence;
- above 700 cc: proven experience of at least 2 years on bikes with similar characteristics is required.
In addition, you need an ID card or passport and adequate experience. The shop reserves the right to assess your experience at pickup and may refuse the rental, without a refund, if it concludes that you do not ride that model safely. It is rare, but it happens, and it is worth knowing before you pick a 145 hp bike just because it looked good in the photo.
On the validity of your licence outside Portugal, the European portal Your Europe explains that a driving licence issued in an EU country can be used throughout the EU, as long as it is valid for the whole trip. If your licence is from a country outside the EU, the same portal recommends contacting the authorities of the issuing country or the embassy. In Portugal, the body responsible for licences is the IMT, Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes (Institute for Mobility and Transport), and that is where you should confirm any doubt about recognition before travelling. The final decision on the rental always rests with the shop, with the original document in front of them.
Where you can ride: mainland Portugal and Spain
By default, the bike stays in mainland Portugal. All of them have GPS tracking, for safety, theft prevention and checking the borders set in the contract. Breaking those limits is a serious breach of contract, so do not improvise a trip to Seville on day five.
Leaving the country is possible, but only with prior, express authorisation from the shop and with the corresponding insurance and assistance extension. The one for Spain costs €58 per 10 days. If you already know you want to cross the border, say so when booking, not at the shop door. Madeira and the Azores are outside the rental by default, since the rule is mainland Portugal.

Which bike to choose for several days
Here there is a criterion more important than power: range and comfort. A bike that makes you stop every 300 km is not worse, but it changes the rhythm of the day. The figures from the spec sheets, in October 2026:
| Model | Price per day (October 2026) | Approx. range | Licence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honda PCX125 | €46 | 320 km | A1 (or B, 25 years) |
| Honda ADV 350 | €80 | 330 km | A2 |
| Honda NC750X | €100 | 400 km | A |
| Honda Transalp 750 | €110 | 390 km | A |
| Yamaha Tracer 9 GT | €155 | 380 km | A |
The Honda NC750X is the practical choice: 59 hp, 216 kg, 800 mm seat, a range of about 400 km and €100 per day. It will not make your heart race, but it covers kilometres without complaint. The Honda Transalp 750 costs €10 more per day, has 92 hp, 208 kg and an 850 mm seat. It is a mid-size adventure bike, easier to manage than a 145 hp BMW GS, and it suits anyone who mixes tarmac with a dirt track. For comfort on the open road, the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT (119 hp, 227 kg, automatic gearbox according to the spec sheet) is the fleet's sport-tourer, but it requires experience.
To see the price and book a date, open the Honda Transalp 750 page and start your motorcycle rental in Portugal. The price and availability are always there.
And scooters? For three or four days exploring the coast and the hills near Lisbon, a 125 cc scooter does the job and saves money. But for crossing the country with luggage, the fixed leg position and the uneven road surface tire you out more than you would think. The Honda ADV 350 is the middle ground: 28.8 bhp, 186 kg, automatic transmission and a 795 mm seat.
How to plan the stages
The classic mistake of those who rent to travel is drawing 450 km days on the map. On paper it looks like little, on the road it is seven hours counting stops, and by the end of the second day nobody wants to look at the scenery. The rule that works: between 250 and 300 km per day, knowing that you can do 400 without pushing the contract limit.
Some practical criteria:
- Fuel. The bike is handed over with a full tank and must come back full. If it does not, a refuelling fee is charged plus the missing fuel, deducted from the deposit.
- Weather. Check the forecast from the IPMA, Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere) the evening before and in the morning. On the coast, wind and fog change the plan more often than rain.
- Roads. For roadworks and restrictions on the road network, the Infraestruturas de Portugal website is the official starting point.
- Accommodation. Book with free cancellation on weekends and leave weekdays open. That way, if the weather or tiredness changes the plan, you lose little.
- Luggage. Less is better. A 30-litre backpack and a waterproof bag are enough for a week, with one change of clothes drying every night.
For a first three-day trip, the coast south of Lisbon is a good school: varied roads, frequent stops, and the shop within reach if something goes wrong. If you want concrete stages, you can follow the route for the Costa Vicentina by motorbike.

Booking, cancelling and returning
Booking is done with 30% of the total. If you need to cancel, the conditions depend on how much notice you give: more than 7 working days entitles you to 100% of the amount paid; between 7 and 5 days, 70%; between 5 and 3 days, 50%; with less than 24 hours or in case of a no-show, there is no refund. An early return also does not generate credit for the unused days.
On return, the bike must arrive on the date and time in the contract. Lateness is paid at the current rate, with additional days, and there may be a penalty fee if it prevents delivery to another customer. Returning outside the shop's opening hours is possible with advance notice and costs €50.
Frequently asked questions
Can I rent a motorbike for several days and ride more than 400 km in a single day?
Yes. The limit is calculated on the total of the rental, multiplying the days by 400. If you ride 600 km one day and 200 km another, the total counts, not the day. Only the kilometres above the total are charged, at €0.49 each.
Does the daily price go down if I rent for two weeks?
No. There is no long-rental discount: you pay the daily price on the bike's page, at the October 2026 prices, multiplied by the days. The advantage of staying longer lies in spreading the fixed costs of the trip, not in the rate.
Can I take the bike to Spain?
Only with prior, express authorisation from the shop and with the insurance and assistance extension for Spain, which costs €58 per 10 days. Without that, riding is restricted to mainland Portugal, and the bike has GPS.
Is the deposit charged or only blocked?
Only blocked, as a pre-authorisation on a credit or debit card in the name of the contract holder. If the bike comes back without damage, without missing fuel and without unpaid tolls or fines, the hold is released; each bike's page states 5 working days, and your bank may take longer to update the available balance.
Do I need to bring the physical card, or is my phone enough?
The deposit is processed at the shop's payment terminal, so bring the physical card, credit or debit, with an available limit above the amount for the bike you chose. A virtual card stored only on your phone is not the safest plan, so confirm with the shop before you arrive.
