Motorcycle Rental Deposit: Amounts, Card Hold and Release
Motorcycle rental deposit in Lisbon: how much per model, how the credit or debit card hold works and when the amount becomes available again.

Almost everyone who books a motorcycle in Lisbon asks about the daily price first and only later, at the counter, discovers that there is another number in the contract. The motorcycle rental deposit is not a fee, it is not a down payment and, if all goes well, it does not cost you a cent. Even so, it is the part of the rental that raises the most questions: how much gets blocked, on which card, for how long and what happens if there is a scratch on the tank. This guide explains how the motorcycle rental deposit works at RENT.MOTO.PT, with the amounts currently shown on the model pages and in the rental terms, and adds what consumer protection bodies advise for any vehicle rental in Europe.
In short:
- The deposit ranges from €400 (Honda Vision NSC110) to €2,200 (BMW R1300GS Adventure), depending on the model.
- It is blocked at pick-up, on a physical credit or debit card in the name of the contract holder. Cash does not work.
- It is not a payment: it is a hold on your card limit that only becomes a charge if there is damage, missing fuel, tolls or fines.
- Each bike's page states a refund within 5 working days; the balance can take longer, because the last step depends on the issuing bank.
- The online booking is paid with 30% of the amount; the deposit is handled separately, at the counter in Sobreda.
What the deposit is, and what it is not
When someone rents a motorcycle, the company hands a vehicle worth many thousands of euros to a person it does not know. The deposit exists to bridge that gap. Under the RENT.MOTO.PT terms, it serves as a guarantee for any damage to the vehicle, insurance excess, tolls, fines, missing fuel and late returns. It is in clause 4.1 of the contract, and the reasoning is the same as at any rental company. The European Consumer Centre of Ireland describes it like this: many companies hold a deposit on your card to protect their vehicles and cover costs such as damage, parking fines, unfilled tanks or excessive cleaning, and if you return the car in the condition you collected it, you get the amount back. Full explanation on the ECC Ireland page on vehicle rental deposits.
What the deposit is not deserves the same attention. It is not an additional rental cost: the daily price already includes VAT, third-party liability insurance, roadside assistance, 400 km per day, a basic helmet and a lock. Nor is it the booking down payment. That payment is 30% of the rental amount and is paid online, when you book. The deposit only comes into play at pick-up, and it is processed separately.
How much it is: amounts by model
The rental terms mention amounts that usually fall between €600 and €2,300, and say that the exact figure for each model is on its page. Looking at the model pages, the real range goes from €400 on the smallest scooters to €2,200 on the BMW R1300GS Adventure. The logic is predictable: the higher the value of the vehicle and the cost of a fall, the higher the deposit. The table lists the most popular models with the daily prices for October 2026 (VAT included), so you can see the relationship between the two columns.
| Model | Price per day (October 2026) | Deposit |
|---|---|---|
| Honda Vision NSC110 | €35.68 | €400 |
| Honda PCX125 | €45.77 | €600 |
| Yamaha MT-125 | €59.51 | €600 |
| Yamaha NMAX 125 Tech MAX | €62.57 | €600 |
| Honda ADV 350 | €79.84 | €800 |
| Honda CMX500 Rebel | €81.00 | €800 |
| Honda NC750X | €100.43 | €1,000 |
| Honda Transalp 750 | €110.35 | €1,000 |
| Yamaha Tenere 700 Rally | €120.20 | €1,300 |
| Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin | €139.50 | €1,100 |
| Ducati Multistrada V2 S Travel | €170.43 | €1,500 |
| BMW R1300 GS Trophy | €179.40 | €2,000 |
| BMW R1300GS Adventure ASA | €195.25 | €2,200 |
Two details stand out from the table. First, the relationship is not linear. The Africa Twin costs more per day than the Tenere 700, but has a lower deposit, €1,100 against €1,300. Second, the 125s are all at €600, even with different daily prices. Rather than looking for a formula, treat the figure on the model page as a fixed fact about that model. Prices and deposits can change, so always check the number on the page on the day you book.

How the card hold works
At pick-up, the payment terminal makes a pre-authorisation for the agreed amount. In practical terms, the customer's bank reserves that sum and stops showing it as available, but the money does not leave the account as a payment. The RENT.MOTO.PT terms describe it as a temporary hold on the card limit, not an immediate debit. That is why the balance "returns" later, instead of being refunded as a transfer.
Which card works
The deposit is processed on a valid, physical credit or debit card in the name of the rental contract holder. Cash is not accepted for this purpose. The name rule is strict and is the one that most surprises people travelling as a couple or in a group: the card of a partner, friend or relative does not solve it. The same warning appears in the ECC Ireland recommendations, which remind you that companies usually require the card to be in the driver's name and that some operators refuse third-party cards. The terms specify a physical card, so bring the plastic.
Credit or debit: what changes in practice
With a credit card, the hold uses up credit limit and does not touch the money in your account. With a debit card, the amount leaves the available balance of the account for as long as the hold lasts. If you have €700 in your account and a deposit of €1,000, the debit card simply will not work. Before going to the counter, check your available balance, not the accounting balance, and see whether the card's daily or per-transaction limit covers the amount. If the limit is lower than the deposit, sort it out with your bank before leaving home, not at the shop counter.
There is a second precaution, which ECC Ireland also stresses: make sure the card has enough room to cover the deposit and everything else you plan to pay with it during the trip, such as hotels or dinners. A €2,200 hold on a card with a €3,000 limit leaves only €800 for the rest of the week.
What can be deducted from the deposit
Clause 4.1 speaks of a partial or full capture of the held amount when there are costs due: damage, missing fuel, unpaid tolls and fines or penalties. In any of these cases, the company converts part of the hold into an actual charge and releases the remainder. Going through the most common situations:
- Damage: only damage that is not on the hand-over checklist counts. At hand-over, a representative carries out a full inspection of the motorcycle in your presence, records and photographs scratches, dents and defects, and the checklist is issued in duplicate and signed by both parties. On return, only damage that is not on the list is the customer's responsibility.
- Fuel: the motorcycle leaves with a full tank and must come back full. If it does not, a refuelling fee is charged plus the missing fuel, and the amount is deducted from the deposit. The fee varies with the tank capacity.
- Tolls and fines: if there are unpaid toll passages or fines from the rental period, they can be deducted.
- Equipment: the included basic helmet has a replacement value of €50 if lost or damaged. Extra rented equipment, such as a full-face helmet, gloves or a jacket, is charged to the customer if lost or damaged, and if the cost exceeds the deposit, the company reserves the right to ask for the difference.
- Late returns: returning outside the agreed hours is also listed among the reasons for a charge.
It is best not to confuse the deposit with a cap on liability. The terms expressly provide that, if the cost determined exceeds the amount held, the remainder may be requested. The deposit is a guarantee, not a ceiling.
When the money comes back
There are two layers here, and it is useful to understand both. The first is the company's. After the return and the check of the motorcycle's condition, RENT.MOTO.PT issues the order to cancel the hold on the terminal. The terms speak of up to 24 hours after the return. The second layer is the bank's. The terms explain that the time between the release order and the balance update on your card depends exclusively on the issuing bank and on the Visa and Mastercard networks, and they give these references: 7 to 15 working days as a general rule and up to 30 calendar days as the maximum.
Each bike's page, meanwhile, sums up the process in one sentence: the deposit is held separately, at check-in, and refunded in 5 working days. The two statements may seem different, but they describe different moments. The sentence on the page is the company's target deadline. The text of the terms warns that the last step is in the hands of the customer's bank.
If the amount stays on hold beyond that period, the terms point the way: check the cancellation receipt issued by the terminal or sent by email and, after more than 15 working days, contact the issuing bank's customer support with that receipt. The Banco de Portugal (Portugal's central bank), in its leaflet on cards, gives general advice that applies here: check your statements regularly and notify the issuing institution immediately if you detect any anomaly. The leaflet is available on the Banco de Portugal's Bank Customer Portal.

How to avoid arguments at return
Most disputes over deposits come from two things: a scratch that nobody recorded at hand-over and a conversation without proof on the way out. Both can be avoided in ten minutes.
At hand-over, follow the inspection. Walk around the motorcycle with the staff member, point out the scratches you see and ask for them to be put on the checklist. Then take your own photos with the date visible: tank, exhaust, levers, mirrors, fairings, wheels, tyres and the dashboard showing the kilometres. The terms say that only damage missing from the checklist counts as the customer's responsibility, and your best defence is a complete checklist.
At return, fill the tank near the shop and keep the pump receipt. Take new photos of the motorcycle at the return location. Ask for the pre-authorisation cancellation receipt, or confirm that it will arrive by email. If the company presents any deduction, ask for an itemised breakdown in writing.
And if you think a deduction is not justified? The European Consumer Centre of the Netherlands advises always asking for a specification of the costs and claiming a refund in writing if the amount is not justified, attaching the proof. On this centre's template letters page, it suggests attaching the rental agreement, the signed hand-over form, photos or video of the vehicle at departure and at return and the record of the hold. It is the same material we recommend collecting above. See the ECC Netherlands template letter.
Checklist before going to Sobreda
Pick-up is in Sobreda, every day between 09:00 and 19:00. Before leaving Lisbon, run through this list:
- Check the deposit and the required licence on the bike's page. For 125 cc models, the minimum age is 18; for the rest, 21.
- Bring your citizen card or passport, a valid driving licence and the physical card in the name of the contract holder.
- Check the card's available balance or free limit. Add the deposit to whatever is already held for other bookings, such as hotels.
- Check the card's per-transaction limit and, if it is low, ask the bank to raise it temporarily.
- Keep the pre-authorisation receipt and, later, the cancellation one, and allow time for the inspection.
If the deposit for your first choice seems too high for the card you have, the solution is a bike in a lower category. If you are looking for a more affordable alternative, you can see the options for motorcycle rental deposit in the trail range, where a Yamaha Tenere 700 Rally has a deposit of €1,300, and compare with the 125 cc scooters, with deposits of €400 to €600. If something goes wrong
In almost every rental, the deposit comes back without a fuss. When it does not, there is a logical order to follow. Start with the company itself and ask for the cancellation receipt and an itemised breakdown of any amount captured. If the hold is still visible after the bank's deadlines, contact the card issuer with that receipt. If the disagreement is about a deduction, write to the company with the evidence. For consumer complaints, the main public body in Portugal is the Portal do Consumidor (Consumer Portal), where you will find information on rights and ways to resolve disputes.
Frequently asked questions
Is the deposit charged or only blocked?
It is only blocked, as a pre-authorisation on the card. It only becomes a charge, in full or in part, if there are costs due such as damage, missing fuel, tolls or fines. The rest is released.
Can I pay the deposit in cash?
No. The terms are clear: the deposit is processed with a physical credit or debit card in the name of the contract holder, and cash is not accepted for this purpose.
How long does it take for the deposit to be released?
Each bike's page states a refund within 5 working days. The terms add that the company gives the cancellation order up to 24 hours after the return and that the issuing bank may take, as a rule, 7 to 15 working days, up to a maximum of 30 calendar days, to show the balance again.
Is there also a deposit for a 125 cc scooter?
Yes. The Honda Vision NSC110 has a deposit of €400 and the Honda PCX125, the Yamaha MT-125 and the Yamaha NMAX 125 Tech MAX have €600. For these models the minimum age is 18, with an A1, A2 or A licence, or with a B licence and at least 25 years of age, in this case valid only in Portugal.
