A Beginner’s Guide to Renting a Motorcycle in Lisbon: What You Need to Know

If you’ve never rented a motorcycle before—or if it’s your first time riding in Portugal—this guide will help you feel confident and ready to hit the road. Renting a motorcycle in Lisbon is a straightforward process, but there are a few important things to keep in mind.

1. What You Need to Rent a Motorcycle

  • A valid driver’s license with the appropriate category (A for motorcycles, A2/A1 depending on the engine size).
  • An International Driving Permit (IDP) if your license is not in Latin script.
  • A passport or government-issued ID.
  • A credit card for the rental deposit.

2. Age Requirements

Most rental companies in Lisbon require you to be at least 21 years old and have at least 1 year of riding experience. Some scooters can be rented from age 18.

3. Choose the Right Bike

  • Scooters (50cc–125cc): Great for city traffic and short trips.
  • Naked bikes (250cc–650cc): Ideal for scenic rides and more comfort.
  • Touring bikes: For multi-day trips with extra luggage.

Consider your experience level, trip length, and riding comfort when choosing.

4. Gear and Safety

Your rental should include a helmet (required by law), but we recommend wearing:

  • Gloves
  • A riding jacket
  • Closed shoes (no flip-flops!)

You can also rent or bring your own gear for added comfort and safety.

5. Insurance Options

Most rentals include basic insurance. Make sure you understand:

  • What’s covered (damage, theft, liability)
  • What’s not covered (tires, windshield, gear)
  • Your deductible amount

You can often add full coverage for peace of mind.

6. Riding Laws in Portugal

  • Drive on the right-hand side of the road.
  • Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger.
  • Speed limits: 50 km/h in cities, 90 km/h on roads, 120 km/h on highways.
  • Lane-splitting is tolerated but not officially legal.

7. Fuel and Refueling

Bikes are generally rented with a full tank, and you’ll need to return it full. Gas stations are easy to find and usually self-service. Check if your rental uses gasoline 95 or 98.

Renting a motorcycle in Lisbon is easier than you think—and it opens up a world of adventure. With the right preparation, you’ll have an unforgettable experience on two wheels.
